The actress will reportedly be singing as part of the opening act for the Justin Bieber concert in Mumbai, but Kailash Kher and Armaan Malik are not amused

Bombay Times was the first to confirm that pop sensation Justin Bieber will be visiting India for his maiden tour and perform in Mumbai on May 10 (Justin Bieber seals his date with India, February 15). Several Bollywood celebrities are going to be a part of the concert and Sonakshi Sinha is one of them. Apparently, the actress will launch her new single in the opening act.

But this doesn't seem to have gone down too well with musicians in the industry. In an interview two days ago, Kailash Kher had reportedly spoken about Sonakshi being got on board to perform at Bieber's concert. He said, “It doesn't give a good message internationally. They (people overseas) will think that Sonakshi must be a big singer in India. Then she will get concert offers, and then probably Sonakshi will laugh them off saying, 'I am not a singer but an actor' (sic).“

Singer Armaan Malik supported Kailash's view and tweeted, “Actors are actors & singers are singers. Leave the stage & mic to us, that's our playground not yours (sic).“ Sonakshi shot back with a series of tweets to Armaan, “Secure artist wud always encourage another artist to grow their skills and follow their dreams. Art in any form should not be suppressed. And this is definitely not the same tune you were singing when you wanted me to sing for you (sic).“

While Sonkashi didn't want to elaborate on her tweets and comment further on the issue, both Kailash and Armaan spoke to BT...

KAILASH KHER:
“In that interview, I was asked for my views on the changing music trend in the country and the impact we have made on the international scene. I answered on a lighter note that we have a long way to go when it comes to making an impression, because whenever an international artiste comes to the country, we pitch him/her against a popular actor or any other celebrity. I found this funny and thought I should point this out. I believe we should get an artiste from the same field to share the stage with an international celebrity. When we don't get a singer to open the act for Justin Bieber, it looks like there are no musicians in our country. This sends out a wrong message. I have nothing against any actor. It was just my opinion that a person from the same field as the international celebrity should represent our country. We have so many proficient singers for whom even Bieber can open the act. There's Asha Bhosle, who is the queen of live performances. Singers like Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam have done so many live shows. It's not like there's a dearth of musicians in the country.“

ARMAAN MALIK:
“I have voiced my opinion on how singers are shunned in this country and actors are given more importance. It's nothing against Sonakshi or anyone in particular. I liked how Kailashji put a very valid point across and I supported his thoughts. I didn't even tag Sonakshi, she tweeted to me herself. I truly believe 'singers are stars' in their own right and it's high time people in this country see this change happen. I am not against any actor singing. All I feel is that the true singers in this country don't get what they deserve.“

The actress’s selection as one of the opening acts for the popstar’s India gig has invited criticism from musicians
Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 25, 2017)

Sonakshi Sinha’s selection as one of the opening acts for Justin Bieber’s upcoming India concert was met with sharp criticism online, most notably by singers Kailash Kher and Armaan Malik. Kailash had contended in an interview, “It doesn’t give a good message internationally. They (people abroad) will think that Sonakshi must be a big singer in India. And then she will get concert offers from Canada, and then probably Sonakshi will laugh them off saying, ‘I am not a singer but an actor.’”

Soon after, Armaan took to Twitter to second Kailash’s statement, posting, “Agree with @Kailashkher sir! Actors are actors & singers are singers. Leave the stage & mic to us, that’s our playground not yours (sic).”

Sonakshi defended herself by arguing that “a secure artist wud always encourage another artist to grow their skills and follow their dreams. Art in any form should not be suppressed (sic)” and pointed out to Armaan, “… this is definitely not the same tune you were singing when you wanted me to sing for you.” Armaan proceeded to tell her that she was mistaking him for his brother, composer Amaal Malik, who jumped into the fray to clarify that he and Armaan haven’t been together at any recent event and definitely hadn’t approached her jointly for a collaboration.

While the actress has chosen not to comment on the matter, Amaal told Mirror, “I feel when an international singing icon tours our country, it is important to put forward our own icons, like Arijit Singh, KK, Sonu Nigam, Armaan. India has some incredible talent that should represent us at such big international gigs. Parineeti (Chopra), Alia (Bhatt) and Shraddha (Kapoor) have done a good job with playback singing recently. I got Salman (Khan) sir to sing 'Main Hoon Hero Tera' for me. This is okay for films but for music concerts as big as Justin Bieber’s, I stand with Kailash Kher. Pure musical artistes should get the opportunity to perform instead of actors who are not conventional musicians.”

About Sona’s remark that he’d approached her for a song, Amaal clarifies, “Yes, I was open to the idea but the song never materialised. But Armaan and I never went to her for a collaboration. The idea was the brainchild of the team of her recently released film and Sonakshi was keen on doing a track. Keeping in mind the genre, situation and the required singing style, the track seemed tough to pull off. I needed true-blooded singers to deliver those melodies and do 100 per cent justice to them.”
